The Toilet

On Georgiana's Gossip Guide I have been writing about about the popular theme of a lady at her toilet or toilette in 18th century art, particularly in France. Not only did it allow artists to portray sensual subject but it gave them a reason to portray nudes in a modern setting. This genre was a common theme through much of art history and can be seen in artwork from around the world.

  6. It's amazing the difference in how the female body is portrayed in the 18th and 19th century versus now. How easy in fine art to "repaint" a model in a different light (and perhaps they did!), yet still beautiful curves and folds are in every nude. I wonder what (if anything) they did "adjust for" in their paintings, or if they were always true to their subjects for the sake of art (although I imagine that wasn't always the case, particularly not in portraits-for-hire).
